The Asus Studiobook 16 OLED is one of the best laptops from the manufacturer that we’ve had the chance to review. Not because it has the next generation CPU (it doesn’t) or the most powerful GPU (wrong again). It doesn’t have a super-bright miniLED display, it’s not HDR certified, and the AMD Ryzen version we tested here doesn’t even have Thunderbolt.

Because it delivers a balance of performance, build quality, portability, affordability, usability, and creative design that you just can’t find in most laptops on the market today. There’s very little we don’t like about this spacious laptop, which makes it our first 5-star rating for a PC since we started reviewing PCs last year.

When it comes to things we don’t like, buying an Asus laptop is one of them. Since there’s no ASUS store where you can customize your build (understandable, but inconvenient), it’s hard to figure out which model has which specs, or how much any combination of specs might cost.

ProArt Studiobook 16 is available in OLED and non-OLED versions, with an 11th Gen Intel or AMD Ryzen 5000 CPU, a variety of possible enterprise and non-enterprise NVIDIA GPUs, and support for up to 4 TB of PCIe 3.0 NVMe storage and 64 GB of memory. All of these qualify as “NVIDIA Studio” laptops – meaning they meet certain performance and screen quality standards and come with the NVIDIA Studio drivers pre-installed – but there are still plenty of options to choose from.

If we look just at the OLED versions, there are four main models – two with consumer-grade GPUs and two with enterprise-grade GPUs – each with different possible configurations. In the table below, all specs listed as “highest” can be downgraded for cheaper SKUs, while the remaining specs are cast for each model.

Overall, consumer prices are very competitive. Competitors like Razer’s Blade 17, MSI Creator 17, Dell’s XPS 17, and of course Apple’s new MacBook Pro 16 look pretty steep by comparison. Each of these competitors is better than the Asus ProArt Studiobook 16 in some categories and worse in others, but I don’t think any of them can match the Asus when you factor in price.

Considering its affordability, we expect the ProArt Studiobook 16 to be somewhere in the middle of the pack for “build quality.” The deck is a bit curved, a regular trackpad and a thicker design if you’re selling this spec at a meager price. That’s not what we found.

The Studiobook 16 is well built, with virtually no deck or screen flex, and a surprisingly slim design for the number and variety of ports Asus offers. The left side of the computer has a USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A port, a power plug, an HDMI 2.1 port that supports up to 4K 120Hz output, and two USB 3.2 Hen 2 Type-C connections with a monitor and power supply Port support. On the right side there’s a Gigabit Ethernet port, a combo audio jack, another Type-A USB 3.2 Gen 2 port, and an SD Express 7.0 card slot.

The only thing our model is missing is Thunderbolt, but that limits every AMD laptop on the market right now. If you have one of the Intel models, one of the USB Type-C ports is Thunderbolt 4/USB-4.

The left side houses the Kensington lock, USB Type-A port, AC power plug, HDMI 2.1 port, and two USB Type-C ports with display and power supply.

On the right side, you’ll find an SD Express 7.0 card slot, an audio combo jack, another USB Type-A port, and a Gigabit Ethernet port.

Design and usability only get better from here. Speaking of keyboard kits, the Studiobook 16 is a great low-profile full-size keyboard with nice large keycaps and a responsive glass-top trackpad that feels great to the touch. In addition to these must-have features, Asus added two interesting features that make the Studiobook stand out: three physical buttons below the trackpad and a mechanical dial.

The Studiobook 16 is very well built, with virtually no deck or screen flex, and the design is surprisingly slim considering the variety of ports Asus has included.

The middle button on the trackpad controls actions such as panning, rotating, or orbiting in 3D applications. It may not be relevant to our audience, but it’s nice to have the option. Mechanical dials, on the other hand, are very useful for photo and video editing. Press it and you’ll see a context menu that shows some of the controls available in whatever app you’re using.

The default desktop controls are just Volume and Brightness, but once you’re in an application like Photoshop, menus expand to offer everything from zooming and rotating to layer navigation and adjusting brush size, opacity, and flow. I find it very handy in Photoshop, especially when used with a graphics tablet, and has a very satisfying click and press mechanism.

The Studiobook 16 has a three-button trackpad for 3D apps and a physical dial for adjusting everything from brightness to brush size in Photoshop.

Very few companies have such a “trick”. Apple is notorious for missing out on the Touch Bar, and Asus has made some mistakes in the past, but this is home. A solid addition to your laptop keyboard set, it quickly feels like a second keyboard set once you start using it.

In Photoshop, mechanical dials let you control everything from scaling and rotating to layer navigation to adjusting brush size, opacity, and flow.

The last thing worth mentioning is the laptop’s upgradeability. The bottom is held in place by 10 Phillips screws, one of which has a hidden plastic add-on that tells the factory if you’ve tampered with the laptop (and voids the warranty). It’s a bit annoying, but once you remove the back panel, you have easy access to the RAM slots and two PCIe 3.0 M.2 slots, making this laptop super upgradeable.

It’s slightly better than the Dell XPS 17, which uses special Torx screws on the bottom, and jumps better than the MSI Creator 17, which hides the RAM slots under the motherboard, forcing you to upgrade if you want to later Take the entire device apart.

Removing the rear panel of the Studiobook 16 provides easy access to the RAM slots and M.2 slots.
