However, the ZenBook Flip S has a few extras. Like the ASUS Pen and a USB-C dongle that splits into one USB-C charging port, HDMI and another USB-A port. I’m glad ASUS is so thoughtful and takes the pain out of finding aftermarket dongles.

There’s also a PU leather case that comes in the box itself, but it has a special twist compared to the PU leather cases found on other ZenBooks. We’ll talk more about that in the next section.

First, let’s take a look at the ZenBook Flip S’s case. It might look the same as before, but opening it up reveals a unique little design: a pen holder and a small pouch behind. The pen holder is obviously for storing the ASUS Pen, while the bag is for the dongle.

However, the small pocket to fit the dongle seems unexpected as it would create a bulge behind the laptop sleeve. However, the ASUS Pen can of course fit into the case.

The ZenBook Flip S also looks pretty slim. It is impossibly thin. It’s so thin that it can’t fit into any USB-A ports, as those ports are thicker than the laptop itself. ASUS compensates for this by having a total of two USB-C ports. Unfortunately, these are not Thunderbolt 3 ports. There is no way to connect an external graphics card.

Flip it over and use it at the angle you want. The hinge is nothing new if you’ve seen ASUS convertible laptops before. If it works, there’s no reason to fix it.

The screen itself is highly reflective as ASUS has chosen a glossy finish. That’s to be expected, since the ZenBook Flip S has a touchscreen. That said, ASUS has also included its beautiful NanoEdge technology in the ZenBook Flip S, so it has very small bezels around the screen.

The 13.3-inch 1080p IPS display looks absolutely stunning, with colors well calibrated. ASUS claims it also has a 100% sRGB color gamut. The colors reproduced are fantastic.

The screen itself is solid enough to handle most everyday use, but it gets a bit shaky when using the touchscreen. When it comes to typing, the screen can be quite stable. However, the lid cannot be lifted with just one finger. The body will rise together.

Now I realize how many input methods the ASUS ZenBook Flip S has. There’s the usual trackpad and keyboard, then there’s also a touch screen and stylus input with the ASUS Pen. That’s a total of 4 different input methods!

Start with the trackpad. It has a smooth finish and feels great on my fingertips. While it’s a pretty good experience for a Windows-based trackpad, it’s still a far cry from what Apple has done with its trackpad. I find it too sensitive at medium sensitivity. I had to set it to the lowest sensitivity to use it properly. In terms of clicks, it’s fine.

The keyboard offers quite an interesting experience. Even though the ZenBook Flip S is stupidly thin, the keyboard still retains a decent amount of travel. That being said, ASUS has tightened up the keyboard switch a bit. The keys bend and the keys immediately fall out when a certain force is applied. It’s quite tiring to type on this keyboard, to be honest. And the keyboard is also backlit in white. My only complaint is how frustrating it is to use the arrow keys on the ZenBook Flip S.

Since the entire keyboard is embedded in the frame itself, pressing the down arrow key is even more difficult.

Finally, the ASUS Pen. Surprisingly, the pin itself is perfect. It can track my pen movements accurately and with minimal input lag. However, I do have a few gripes. The placement of the pen’s buttons is a little…inconvenient to reach. Another complaint is the increased distance from the pin. I find it a little annoying that the distance between the spacers is about 2 cm, and that it will have a weird touch with my writing style and destroy everything I write or draw.

This may be personal preference and your mileage may vary. The ASUS Pen uses a single AAAA battery and can be easily replaced by detaching the body.

First off, don’t expect the ASUS ZenBook Flip S to be gaming-grade. It doesn’t even have a Thunderbolt 3 port for external graphics! Other than that, the specifications of the ZenBook Flip S seem to be very good for an ultrabook.

The use case for this laptop won’t be as intense as a gaming laptop, though. However, when it comes to web browsing and watching videos, the ASUS ZenBook Flip S can perform very well. It doesn’t lag, and when memory swapping happens, it’s pretty fast thanks to the fast PCIe Gen. 3×4 NVMe SSD. Only that SSD is from Samsung, and it achieves insane speeds.

In our tests, we found that the included Samsung NVMe SSD can actually reach 245,618.2 IOPS. It is certainly impressive.

The ASUS ZenBook Flip S is not the easiest when it comes to maintenance. The back plate is held in place by Torx screws. Once removed, the back plate can be lifted off fairly easily.

At first glance, there were two things that immediately caught my attention: first, the enormous battery. Seriously, it’s the battery

The second is a bright orange skin. Upon further inspection, I discovered that the bright orange sheet is actually a sheet of copper acting as a heatsink. The numbers next to the screws are the screw/loosen sequence. Underneath those square screws is the CPU kill itself. Maintenance is quite easy.

The copper sheet covers the entire area and reaches the fan. It’s a clever design as any air intake will come into contact with the copper plate and PCB components before exiting through the left side gut.

However, the only upgradeable component is the M.2 2280 NVMe SSD itself. It comes with a high-end Samsung NVMe SSD, so I don’t see any improvement in the first place.

ASUS also included what appears to be an aluminum heat spreader on the NVMe SSD itself, and another thermal device on top. This thermal pad then makes contact with the ZenBook Flip S’s aluminum backplate, passively cooling the NVMe SSD. smart

As for the battery, all I can say is that the ASUS ZenBook Flip S can last about 5 hours of web browsing, running some music and social networking sites while using half the performance. As we have seen before, the battery itself looks big, but it is quite thin. The total volume of the battery is quite small, so the battery is only 39Wh.

However, ASUS has decided to take control of the power plan away from the user. There is only one power plan available, and it is balanced. ASUS then introduces a slider in the battery menu itself, asking if you want higher performance or longer battery life.

A slightly modified power plan option can be viewed when the AC outlet is connected. I find it quite…odd that ASUS would use the phrase “best battery life” while plugged in. I’m sure ASUS wants to get the message across that using ‘power saving’ mode when plugged in means it can charge faster, but instead they’ve labeled it as ‘best battery life’.

I’m not sure if using a meter like this is a good idea. ASUS has kept the details and differences of all modes under wraps, but from a simple Cinebench benchmark, it looks like they got the 224CB in the best battery mode and the processor runs around 1.9GHz most of the time. Best Performance
