Last year, Lenovo’s Yoga Slim 7i Carbon won the Tech Awards in the Best Ultraportable Laptop category. They will certainly hope to repeat this feat. So to say that this new notebook has a lot on its shoulders would be an understatement.

This is the Yoga Slim 7 Carbon. Yes, there is no “I”. Yes, Lenovo’s laptops have better names. In fact, their lineup is getting more and more confusing. However, the important thing to know is that this is their latest ultraportable laptop. It combines an OLED display and AMD’s latest mobile processors in a slim and lightweight body. In fact, Lenovo claims it’s the world’s lightest 14-inch OLED laptop. Let’s take a closer look.

One interesting thing about the Yoga Slim 7 Carbon is that it is powered by AMD’s Ryzen 5000 series of processors. To be honest, these apps are not entirely new. They were announced earlier this year at CES 2021, but only now are they showing up in more notebooks. You can blame the global chip shortage affecting everything from laptops to phones, networking equipment and even cars.

The unit I have is top of the range with a Ryzen 7 5800U processor, 16GB of memory, 512GB of storage and NVIDIA GeForce MX450 discrete graphics.

Considering the specifications, the Yoga Slim 7 Carbon is attractively priced. Regardless of the model you choose, you’ll get a high-resolution OLED display, 16GB of memory, and 512GB of storage. Some users will be concerned about the lack of a 1TB storage option, and I certainly feel that. However, with so much of our content in the cloud these days, this shouldn’t be a problem for most users.

The Yoga Slim 7 Carbon isn’t the prettiest notebook. It’s only available in Cloud Grey, which is actually a fancy name for silver. It doesn’t look terrible, but it doesn’t look exciting or particularly expensive in the same way as the Dell XPS 13 or HP Specter 13. I don’t think it’s a bad thing if you plan to use it mostly outdoors since you’ve won. Does not attract unnecessary attention.

Lenovo claims this is the world’s lightest 14-inch OLED laptop. Thanks to a chassis made from aerospace-grade magnesium alloy and carbon fiber, the Yoga Slim 7 Carbon weighs less than a kilogram — 1,077 kg, to be exact. That’s almost 300g less than the recently reviewed ASUS ZenBook 14X OLED, which has a 14-inch OLED display. Lenovo also claims that it meets MIL-STD-810H durability standards, so it’s not a liability. The Yoga Slim 7 Carbon also lives up to its slim name, measuring just 14.9mm thick.

Its slim dimensions come with one major drawback, and that is the ports. It has three USB-C ports and a 3.5mm audio combo jack. The problem here is that there are only USB-C ports, not Thunderbolt ports. That means the notebook can’t connect to Thunderbolt’s fast storage or docks, and can’t use all three ports for charging. As it is, the ports only support the USB 3.2 Gen 2 standard, so you only get data transfer speeds of up to 10 Gbps. Additionally, the only two ports on the left support power charging and video output. The single USB-C port on the right is only good for data transfer. Last year’s Yoga Slim 7i Carbon had two Thunderbolt 4 ports, like most competing premium and flagship ultraportable laptops. Thankfully, wireless connectivity is good with support for Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) and Bluetooth 5.1.

However, the view is excellent. It features an OLED panel with a 16:10, 90 Hz refresh rate and a resolution of 2880 x 1800 pixels. It covers 100% of the P3 color space and is certified by Pantone. It also meets the VESA DisplayHDR 500 True Black specification and has a maximum brightness of 600 nits. If this all sounds familiar, it’s the same as the ASUS ZenBook 14X OLED. They should use the same panel. However, unlike the ASUS, it doesn’t support touch inputs. Without professional measurement tools, it’s difficult to verify these claims, but overall the screen looks great with crisp visuals and vivid colors. It brightens and the blacks are, as they should be, inky black.

Above the screen is a 720p camera, which, like most laptop cameras, is pretty unpromising. The images it produces are very blurry and it gets worse if the lighting is poor. On the upside, it has a ToF sensor and can be used for quick Windows Hello logins.

I don’t usually mention notebook speakers because they’re often terrible. However, the speakers on the Yoga Slim 7 Carbon are pretty good. It has a dual tweeter and woofer setup, and while it’s not quite as good as Apple’s new 14-inch MacBook Pro, its clear bass sense and ability to go loud without falling apart put it easily in a class above its rivals. .

I’m always wary when a notebook manufacturer advertises a new keyboard switch. And on the Yoga Slim 7 Carbon, Lenovo says it features a TrueStrike keyboard with a “distinct caterpillar mechanism and rubber dome switches.” I couldn’t find pictures of this mechanism to show you, but luckily, it works really well and I have no issues with chatter or unresponsive keys. Although, admittedly, I’ve only been using it for the past week. Most importantly, the main feeling is strong and positive, and ends with equal stress. The layout is standard, but I think it could definitely do with bigger Enter and Backspace keys.

The route table is enlarged. It now measures 12cm by 7.5cm, making it one of the largest keyboards in its class. The tracking is flawless – it’s smooth, responsive and accurate. However, the click mechanism needs some work.
