Pink Noise: Can It Help You Sleep?
For the Factory vision 4.0 of the 21st century, artificial noise filtering methods are needed. From different physical points of view, noise filtering capabilities can be approached in several ways. In this paper, the physics of noise control is first divided into active and passive control mechanisms, and then the different physics are classified to visualize their respective physics, mechanism, and goal of their respective applications. In addition to traditional passive approaches, a relatively modern concept of sound insulation and acoustic noise filtering is based on artificial metamaterials. These new materials demonstrate a unique interaction with the propagation of acoustic waves by exploiting different physics, which is highlighted in this paper. Several multifunctional metamaterials have been reported that harvest energy and simultaneously filter ambient noise. It was found to be extremely useful for next-generation noise applications where green energy could be simultaneously generated from otherwise wasteful energy. In this paper, these two concepts are brought under one umbrella to evaluate the applicability of the respective methods. An attempt was made to create transformative and innovative possibilities for cooperation. Control of acoustic sources and active damping mechanisms is listed under active mechanism. While approaching the Helmholtz resonator, sound absorption, spring mass damping, and vibration absorption along with metamaterial approaches are introduced within the passive mechanism. It is reported that the potential application of ventilated metamaterials in performing noise filtering will be implemented for future smart cities.
