The DIY barn door project I’m sharing with you today is a great effort for a crazy time that we can build doors in our garage and outside without interrupting our flow.

The project is not only simple, but also affordable for the budget. For $50 per door (excluding sliding hardware), we can replace our boring double closet doors with sliding barn doors.
Personal design and functionality are particularly important for this place, not only because of the mud chairs located near the open door, but also because this is our closet and I have access to the washer and dryer.
With the panel design and glossy satin finish of black paint (Sherwin Williams “Tricorn Black” for real), the typical farmhouse door is given a slightly higher edge – perfect for the entire Modern Farmhouse aesthetic .

While I bought long, contemporary stems to install on both doors, considering the overlapping functions of our design, the handles make everything look unbalanced. But as the saying goes, sometimes less is more.
However, I am happy with the minimal results. Now I will show you how to build these panel doors.

How To Fix A Bi Fold Closet Door
(Step 1). With a miter saw, cut the stiles and rails (aka door frame) to the desired dimensions (I used 2×6’s).
(Step 3.) Attach a square dowel (1/2″) to the inside edge with 18ga or 16ga nails. Hold the piece of metal in place and remove the nails.
(Step 4). Cut the MDF board to fit the internal dimensions with the board. Make sure the seams of the panels are positioned so that the two central rails of the door frame will hide the seams.
How To Install Bifold Doors
The square panel that comes with it provides an advantage for the panel to rest on. Then attach the mdf board to the dowel with wood glue.
(Step 5). Measure the gap correctly and connect the two center rails (I used 1×5’s) using a pocket hole jig. The 1X wood is needed to ensure that the rails sit with the stones.
(Step 6). Use pocket slots and glue to seal the exposed holes in the two central rails. If removing from a pocket hole, use an oscillating saw to cut the flow.
How To Turn A Bifold Door Into French Doors
(Step 7). Attach 1/4″ steel panels with wood glue on the inside edges to seal the seams where the mdf panels meet the rails and the floor. They also add detail to the project.
(Step 8). Use wood filler to smooth the seams. If necessary, use an oscillating saw to make the kreg plugs slide with the rest of the door. To eliminate imperfections on the surface of your door, use a trajectory sander.
(Step 9). Now you can paint your door. I used this primer. For the paint I used

Jason put in a new door frame so the old double doors fit our new closet door remodel.
He added 2 x 4’s to the center of the door to make room for the screws.

He also lowered the header so the door completely closes off the space and leaves no gaps or openings above or below our new closet door.
Jason also added two long shelves in the top and bottom of the closet to store more clothes and space for his shoes.
We paint the inside of the cabinet white to illuminate everything for the decoration of the cabinet door.

Before hanging our new battered cabinet doors, Jason spaced the doors about 1/8 inch apart to allow the hinges to set so they could close properly.
After applying several coats of paint, we brought in a new cabinet door to see how it would fit.
